<div style="text-align: center;">
Goddess Durga the supreme power of the Supreme Being be surely,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Universe Mother - power of creation, preservation and destruction truly,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She rides the Lion - signifying power, will and determination certainly, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Saying "Surrender all actions onto me and I free you from fears totally".</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Her forms Kali, Bhagvati, Bhavani, Ambika, Lalita, Gauri, and others be,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Her nine appellations are Skondamata, Kusumanda, Shailaputri, Kaalratri,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Brahmacharini, Maha Gauri, Katyayani, Chandraghanta and Siddhidatri,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She ever protects her devotees from evils and removes all their miseries.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Like Shiv, Durga referred as "Triyambake", the three eyed Goddess be, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Left - desire (moon), right - action (sun), central - knowledge (fire) clearly. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Her eight or ten hands represent eight quadrants or ten directions fully,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Trishul" shows (Satwa, Rajas, Tamas) inactivity, activity and non-activity.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Conch shell in her hand implies 'Om', indicating her hold on to God truly, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Her bow and arrows represent full control over both aspects of energy, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The thunderbolt signifies firmness – firmness of convictions forcefully, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lotus in her hand not fully bloomed - signifies success but not finality.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Sudarshan-Chakra" on her index finger - the world obedient to her will be, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using it to destroy evil and produce growth of righteousness universally, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The sword she holds in one of her hands symbolizes knowledge totally,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She removes (physical, mental and spiritual) all three types of miseries.<br />

Shail means mountains; Parvati, the daughter of king of Mountains Himavan, is known as "Shailputri" means the daughter of mountain, as she is the daughter of Parvatraj Himalaya (King of the Mountain). Maa Shailputri is the absolute form of Mother Nature. She is also known as Goddess Parvati the consort of Lord Shiva and mother of Ganesh and Kartikeya. In the Navratra festival the worshiping Mother Goddess has a half moon on her forehead, holds a trident in her right hand, lotus flower in her left hand and rides on mount Nandi a bull. Shailaputri wears a light pink or white coloured sare.<o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
Goddess Shailputri is the first among the nine Navadurga Goddesses. Shailputri mata is worshipped on the first day during Durga Navratri Pooja. The Goddess is worshipped on Kalash Sthapana or Ghatsthapana day.<o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
In some scriptures like Shivapurana & Devi Bhagvatam the story of Mother Goddess is written as follow:<o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt; margin-left: 36pt; margin-right: 22.7pt; margin-top: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<i>Maa Bhagwati in her earlier birth was born as a daughter of Daksh Prajapati. Then her name was ‘Sati’ and she was married to Lord Shiva. But in a sacrificial ceremony organized by her father Prajapati Daksh, she got her body burnt in the yogic fire, because she could not bear the insult of her husband Lord Shiva by her father Prajapati Daksha in the sacrificial ceremony.<o:p></o:p></i></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6pt; margin-left: 36pt; margin-right: 22.7pt; margin-top: 0cm; text-align: justify;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<i>In her next birth she incarnated her as Goddess Parvati, the daughter of Parvatraj Himalaya and among Nava Durgas she has been referred to as Sailaputri who was again known as Himavati. In her Haimavati aspect she defeated all prominent gods. Like her previous birth in this life also Maa Shailaputri (Parvati) got married with Lord Shiva.<o:p></o:p></i></div>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
The first and the most prominent among Nava Durgas, Shailaputri is of immense importance and her glories are endless.<o:p></o:p></div>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">She is the Devi of the root chakra, who, upon awakening, begins Her journey upwards. Sitting on Nandi, and making her first journey from the Muladarachakra. As from her father to her husband – the awakening Shakti, beginning Her search for Lord Shiva or making a move towards her Shiva. So that, In navrati pooja the first day Yogi’s keep their mind concentrated on Muladhara. This is the starting point of their spiritual discipline. They started their Yogasadha from here. Shaila Putri is the Mooladhara Shakti to be realized within Self and sought for higher depths, in the yogic meditation</span><br />

Navratri or Navratras (means "Nine Nights"), a Hindu festival of nine nights, is celebrated with devotion and love. It is colourful incorporating worship and prayer by song and dance of Goddess Durga (Maa Durga) who exists in <a href="http://navratri9.blogspot.com/2011/04/nine-forms-worshiped.html">many forms</a> and is the manifestation of absolute energy that pervades the Universe.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the devout these days are the sacrosanct for it is during these days when Goddess Durga takes a stock of her devotees and grants all blessings, removes ills and problems of her devotees.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">The Motherhood of God</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Navaratri is a festival in which God is adored as Mother. To celebrate a good harvest and to propitiate the nine planets, women also plant nine different kinds of food grain seeds in small containers during these nine days and then offer the young saplings to the goddess.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Celebrated Twice a Year</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>First Navratas</b> - celebrated in the bright two-week period of Shukla Paksha of the lunar month of Ashwani, (September/October) from 1st to 9th date of the two week period.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Second Navratras</b> - celebrated in the first nine days of the bright two-week period of Shukla Paksha of the lunar month of Chaitra, (mid-March to April).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Timing of the Navratras relate to autumnal and vernal equinox that is also the time when seasons change and crops are harvested which adds to the gaiety.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Those Nine Days</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Navratri's each night is dedicated to one <a href="http://navratri9.blogspot.com/2011/04/nine-forms-worshiped.html">form of Goddess Durga</a>. That is every ratri of the Navratri corresponds to worship of <a href="http://navratri9.blogspot.com/2011/04/nine-forms-worshiped.html">different forms of Maa Durga</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some say these nine days are divided and devoted to the Trinity of God worshiped in the female form in which for three days each:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Maa Durga (Goddess of valor) - <i>Tamas</i></li>
<li>Maa Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth) - <i>Rajas</i></li>
<li>Maa Saraswati (Goddess of Knowledge and Art) - <i>Sattva</i> qualities are worshiped and surrendered to the respective devi's </li>
</ol>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the fifth day, that is, Lalita Panchami books are gathered; lamp lighted to invoke Saraswati. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The eighth and ninth day, Yagna (sacrifice offered to the fire) is performed to honour heavenly Goddess and bid her farewell.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This period of Navratri recitation of sacred scriptures, such as <a href="http://booksmmisra.blogspot.in/2014/03/devi-mahtmayam-in-english-rhyme.html" target="_blank">Devi Mahatmayam</a>, (also known as Durga Saptashati, Sri Chandi or Saptashati) from Markanday Puran, is done:</div>

<li>Navratra pooja is done two ways by Kalash Sthapana and without Kalash Sthapana.</li>
<li>Navratri Kalash Sthapna should not be done at night.</li>
<li>Worshiping young girls is also a ritual in Navratri.</li>
<li>For worshiping girls, they should be in between two to ten years of age.</li>
<li>In an inability situation husband can do the rituals at place of his wife and wife can also do the ritual at the place of her husband.</li>
<li>Since Lord Shiva is a form of day and Goddess Bhagvati is a form of night so prayers must be offered at night also.</li>
<li>Goddess Bhagwati is fond of all kinds of red flowers and loving all white flowers with nice fragrance.</li>
<li>Fasting should finish on Navmi or Dashmi.</li>
</ol><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">While fasting</span></div><div><ol style="text-align: left;"><li>Eat one meal a day and on one sitting.</li>
<li>The food should be without onions and garlic and pure vegetarian.</li>
<li>First the devotee should offer prayers and food to MataRani and then eat the meal as prasad.</li>
<li>Do chant "JAI MATA DI" nine times before starting and after finishing the meal.</li>
<li>It should preferably be taken after sunset. (If the time after sunset is not possible, then any other time is also fine, but should be taken after offering prayers and as prasad.)</li>
<li>During the rest of the day, fruits, juices, milk and kheer could be taken. (However, some devotees keep fast for all the days by consuming only fruits or liquids This is purely the devotee's choice and offering to the Great Maa Vaishno Devi.)</li>
<li>Please note it is not a compulsion to keep fasts for devotees who have health problems, medical reasons or for any other problems. MataRani is all-knowing and kind and showers her blessings on all her devotees.</li>
<li>During Navratras, the devotee must keep his mind, body and thoughts pure.</li>
<li>Try and visit MataRani temples and offer prayers and Aarti daily during this period. You should start the prayers with the name of LORD GANESHA with Ganesh Vandana.</li>
<li>Try and light a JYOT in front of MataRani picture or statue. MataRani is also called JYOTA-WALI and is present in the flame which becomes holy.</li>
<li>Try and sleep on the floor during this period. Do not shave or cut hair during this period.</li>
<li>Try and avoid wearing black cloths and leather during the period of fasting.</li>
<li>The devotee observing the fasts should avoid sensual and procreation activities during this period.</li>
